At Meerkin & Apel we have a strong team committed to the work we do. Our dynamic team combines the strengths of our younger lawyers with many years experience of our longer serving lawyers supported by a dedicated and efficient administrative personnel.

Isaac Apel

Isaac Apel is the senior partner of Meerkin & Apel. Isaac is experienced in litigation and commercial law for corporate and private business clients and specialises in entertainment and sports law. He is an experienced negotiator.

Isaac is responsible for the direction and management of the firm both as to the quality and type of legal work performed, as well as the human and capital resources.

Isaac graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Laws in 1969.

Michael Czarny

Michael Czarny is a partner of Meerkin & Apel. Michael provides advice in conveyancing, property law and banking and finance. He specialises in banking and finance transactions including residential and commercial property mortgage transactions as well as a variety of non-real estate secured transactions.

Michael's lender clients are investors whom he assists in negotiating, documenting and settling transactions.

Michael was admitted to practice as a Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1977.

Rodney Keith Saw

Rodney Keith Saw is a partner of Meerkin & Apel. Rodney is responsible for the property law department and has in excess of twenty years experience in property law and conveyancing. He also advises on matters relating to sale of business, leasing and franchising.

Rodney graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1977 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce.

David Pringle

David Pringle is a partner of Meerkin & Apel. David provides litigation advice and conducts litigation in commercial contracts, trade practices, intellectual property, administrative law, negligence and employment law in all jurisdictions including the Federal Court and High Court.

David graduated from the Monash University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws.

Felicity Cara-Carson

Felicity Cara-Carson is a partner with Meerkin & Apel. Felicity provides advice on all aspects of commercial law including intellectual property, entertainment law, Wills and estate planning. Felicity is a registered trade mark attorney.

Felicity graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts degree (with a major in Japanese) in 1995, a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Asian Studies) in 1997 and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree in 1999.

Marvin Weinberg

Marvin is a partner in our Commercial Department and was admitted to Practice in 1979 after graduating from Monash University.

Marvin's areas of experience include commercial, property and sports law. He has considerable experience in drafting complex commercial documentation, and has specialist knowledge in the areas of liquor licensing and sports law.

He has extensive experience in business and real estate transactions as well as all aspects of leasing, and also in financing for both lenders and borrowers.

Marvin is an accredited player agent by both the Australian Football League (AFL) and the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) and acts as agent manager and lawyer for a number of high profile past and present AFL players and coaches advising them on contractual matters and also giving them business and investment advice.

Emanuel Tumino

Emanuel was admitted at practice in 1981 and is the Partner in charge of the Footscray office. Emanuel is fluent in Italian.

Emanuel is involved in a wide variety of legal work but concentrates on commercial litigation and mediation in all courts from the Magistrates Court to complex Supreme Court Cases.

Emanuel has also developed an expertise in equal opportunity, employment and industrial law. He acts for many clients, both employers and employees in all aspects of employment law including drawing and advising on employment contracts, negotiating disputes and litigation before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and the Federal Court. He also conducts matters in the retail tenancy list in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

He is a committee member of the Greater Western Chamber of Commerce and also of Melbourne's West Area Consulting Committee and he is a member of the Rotary Club of Footscray. He conducts seminars for local business and also for students at the Victorian University of Technology.

Gary Katz

Gary Katz (BA.LLB) is a Partner of Meerkin & Apel and is the head of our Employment Law/Industrial Relations Department.

Gary has extensive experience in all aspects of Industrial Relations and Employment Law.

Hugh Maclaren

Hugh Maclaren a partner in our litigation department is an accredited commercial litigation specialist and has over ten years experience in the areas of corporate, insolvency, property and securities litigation. Hugh graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Laws in 1994.

Peter Cohen, OAM

Peter graduated from Melbourne University.

Peter is involved in commercial and property law. He has extensive experience in finance and lending.

He has considerable expertise in matters relating to Liquor and Gaming Licences and has wide experience in the drafting of specialised sporting contracts and complex commercial agreements involving import and export licences, agency and distributorship agreements.

Peter is Secretary General of the International Hockey Federation.

Ernest Woolf

Ernie was admitted to practice in 1967 after graduating with honours from Melbourne University.

Ernie has developed a practice in family law and has practiced extensively in the area for two decades. He is a family law specialist having obtained accreditation by the Law Institute of Victoria in 1990, and has developed a reputation as a caring, considerate and highly successful family law lawyer.

He has completed a mediation and conciliation course at the Noble Park Conciliation Centre. In 1986 he became a qualified counsellor after completing a two year course with Doncare.

James Pergl

James Pergl is a senior associate with Meerkin & Apel.  James practices in commercial and civil Litigation and family law and brings to the team a wealth of experience in all jurisdictions with considerable experience in Corporate and Personal Insolvency & Fraud.

James graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons). He has practised both in London and Australia.

Mari is an integral part of our Commercial Department specialising in both Leasing and Banking and Finance. She has extensive experience in both England and Australia graduating from College of Law, Guildford, Surrey, U K.

Jonathan Kaplan

Jonathan is a consultant with the firm. After graduating at the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1977 he also completed a Masters Degree in Commercial Law.

Arriving in Melbourne in 1989 and after practicing law for a number of years, Jonathan became involved in the hospitality industry where over a period of years he owned several cafés and restaurants.

Jonathan now specialises in those aspects of law involving the hospitality industry and general commercial. He writes a monthly column on legal issues in the hospitality industry for foodService magazine and is also a contributor to the Eldred Hospitality E-Newsletter.

Having been through the process of nurturing hospitality businesses from their early stages Jonathan has the ability to anticipate the issues that will confront clients either about to or who have already entered the industry.

Jonathan is also a LEADR accredited mediator.

Jonathan Nguyen

Jonathan Nguyen is an Associate at Meerkin & Apel and was admitted to practice in 1999.

Since his admission, Jonathan has worked exclusively in the area of Employment Law and Industrial Relations. Jonathan has managed complex litigation in various jurisdictions and has provided legal, strategic and practical advice to clients in a wide range of industries including retail, aviation, IT and financial services.

Jonathan has advised and acted for clients on numerous aspects of Employment and Industrial Relations including employment contracts, unfair dismissals, equal opportunity, enterprise bargaining and industrial action.

Joanne Randello

Joanne Randello is a senior associate of Meerkin and Apel practicing in Family Law disputes and litigation.

Joanne has extensive experience in complex property disputes and children's matters. Joanne has particular expertise in agreements which protect assets prior to, and during, cohabitation or marriage.

Joanne recognises the unique nature of family law disputes and provides her clients with commercially prudent legal advice delivered in an empathetic manner.  Joanne leaves no stone unturned in achieving the best result for her clients.  Joanne is an advocate of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes, such as mediation and often uses ADR to commercially resolve a dispute.

Joanne also lectures and conducts tutorial sessions in family law for tertiary students as part of the LLB degree.
